From
the very beginning film was shot on 35 mm wide material.
One reel contained negative film for about ten minutes,
then the operator had to change the reel. Until today we
divide a movie into 3, 6 or whatever reels. The material
was nitrate film, not safe, very inflammable und not durable.
So it is a small miracle, that only two out of the 106 films
of Laurel & Hardy are considered lost, but the search
goes on.
When Warner Brothers came with
"The Jazz Singer" in the cinemas, sound turned
the film industry unside down. Laurel & Hardy had no
problem with sound, but a problem with the demanding foreign
countries. Dubbing was still a problem, so they got - like
many other filmstars - a language teacher, memorized their
dialogue and shot half a dozen sound shorts and one feature
after they finished the english version in different languages,
movies exist in French, Spanish, German and even Italian.
We show in the museum a trailer from "Pardon us",
Stan und Ollie sprechen deutsch. |
